Clive Tyldesley has explained why Rangers first-team regular Borna Barisic missed out on the matchday squad for Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Aberdeen.

It was an extremely emotional evening at Ibrox as the club paid tribute to Walter Smith, who sadly passed away aged 73 earlier this week.

The Gers players didn’t produce the kind of high-energy performance many were hoping to see against an injury-hit Dons side, who were 2-0 up in 16 minutes through goals from Christian Ramirez and Scott Brown.

A header from Alfredo Morelos and a well-taken James Tavernier penalty secured the hosts a point, but it was very much another two dropped rather than one gained and their lead at the top of the table has been cut to just two points.

One of the shock moves on the night was the total omission of first-choice left-back Barisic from the matchday squad.

The Croatia international had started the previous five matches but didn’t even make the bench.

It seems that this was an enforced call rather than a tactical one from Gerrard, though.

Main commentator Tyldesley said during the RangersTV coverage that the 28-year-old had picked up a ‘very minor injury’, ruling him out of contention.

No further details were provided, so it’s currently unclear whether or not Barisic will be able to return to the squad for Sunday’s trip to Motherwell.

He’s been a key performer in recent seasons but hasn’t hit top gear yet this campaign, contributing just two assists to date from 12 appearances across all competitions.

In other news, a first-team player dropped down and an exciting starlet bagged a hat-trick as Rangers B won a five-goal thriller.
