Celtic could now swoop for Zinedine Ferhat, a player Rangers ‘approached’ during the summer transfer window, according to Foot Mercato.

Rangers were first linked with Ferhat by the same outlet back in May 2021.

The 4th Official subsequently asserted that the interest was genuine and that Rangers had approached the winger’s club, Nimes Olympique, regarding a possible transfer.

In the end, Ferhat stayed put, despite Nimes’ relegation from Ligue 1 to Ligue 2.

He’s barely featured so far this season, though, and with his contract up in the summer, he could soon be on the move.

Foot Mercato reports that Celtic are now considering swooping for the 28-year-old Algeria international and could land him on the cheap, with Nimes likely to accept a relatively low offer this month rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

Celtic could move for former Rangers target

Ferhat’s numbers this season certainly aren’t inspiring.

He’s only made four league starts for Nimes and has yet to score or register an assist from his total of seven appearances.

However, he is capable of contributing a lot more when fully motivated and part of the team, as his six goals and ten assists in the French top-flight last season show.

Ferhat’s versatility – he prefers to play out wide but can also play through the middle – is also useful.

The Ibrox links appear to have dried up but if he does end up at Parkhead, the Gers are likely to know plenty about him given their reportedly extensive scouting efforts in the past.

Meanwhile, in a possible transfer blow for Rangers, a Premier League club are reportedly leading the race for a highly-rated 19-year-old.
