Barry Ferguson has been discussing the potential of Brighton star Billy Gilmour joining Rangers as the BBC discuss the ex-Chelsea star’s potential AMEX exit this summer.
The Seagulls only signed the talented 21-year-old star from Stamford Bridge in the summer, paying a reported £9m in the process following his initial breakthrough with the Blues.

But there has been some upheaval in Brighton this season, with manager Graham Potter moving to West London and Italian replacement Roberto Di Zerbi admitting competition is preventing Billy Gilmour breaking into the Brighton squad.
Billy Gilmour struggling to breakthrough at Brighton
With the likes of Argentine World Cup winner Alexis MacAllister and Ecuadorean hotshot Moises Caicedo in front of him, unless there is big change this summer then Billy Gilmour could be looking beyond Brighton.
At least that’s according to BBC Sport, who discussed in detail the need for the player to think closely about his future heading into the upcoming window.
Former Chelsea and Scotland star Pet Nevin is even quoted as saying “the next big call he makes is massive”, with the player restricted to only ten appearances and 334 minutes this season.
Barry Ferguson talks potential Rangers move
That’s why the likes of Rangers legend Barry Ferguson have been discussing the player’s future this week and it appears that the ex-Ibrox skipper believes Gilmour is primed for a move back to Glasgow.
Boyhood bluenose Billy Gilmour came through the youth ranks at Rangers before his switch to Chelsea and subsequent transfer to Brighton.
Ever since he swapped Glasgow for London there have been murmurs about a Billy Gilmour return to Rangers and they will continue until the day the kid calls it quits on his career.
Whilst a twilight swan song at Ibrox remains the topic of much discussion, its a return to the Rangers present that Ferguson believes could reignite Gilmour’s career.
But whilst Ferguson would love the move, he believes the wages involved might block it from happening.
“It’s a big decision and I get he won’t want to uproot again but for his sake – and Scotland’s – he needs to find somewhere that he’s going to get regular action,” said Ferguson.
“I’d love to see him back at Rangers but unfortunately I just don’t see it.
Brighton got him for a bargain when they paid just over £8million to lure him from Stamford Bridge but I think you’d still be surprised by the kind of wages he’d be on and sadly I think that may scupper any hopes for an Ibrox return, even on loan.”
Rangers star Ryan Jack was also preferred to Billy Gilmour for the Scotland European Championship victory over Cyprus.
