Rangers manager Michael Beale has hinted the hunt is on for a midfielder in January – and we reckon Brighton star Billy Gilmour ticks all the boxes if available.

Speaking ahead of the club’s Scottish Premiership clash with Motherwell at Ibrox, Beale claims that Rangers were looking for fresh reinforcements in the position even before a season-ending injury to Steven Davis.

That issue has intensified the discussion around the position and amid uncertainty involving the likes of out-of-contract Ryan Jack and Scott Arfield, it’s a position even Michael Beale believes the club need to invest in.

“We might have been looking anyway to be honest. We’re looking to strengthen everywhere if I’m honest, but in midfield there is a little but of uncertainty I think it’s fair to say,” said Beale [Rangers].

“When you write down our midfield we have a couple of loan players, two or three out of contract at the end of the season.

“Glen Kamara seems to get linked with a new club every day as well. Midfield is an area we will look to strengthen moving forward.”

Could Brighton star Billy Gilmour provide Rangers midfield dynamism?

Rangers’ lack of dynamism and creativity from deep in midfield isn’t exactly something new and the need for that progressive, energetic presence in the middle has been clear for a while.

The Athletic have even claimed that it’s a young, dynamic number 6 which must be the “priority” this January and we reckon Brighton star Billy Gilmour is a clear solution to the problem being painted at Ibrox.

The Gers have been perennially linked with a move for their former Academy talent and were even mentioned in the running before the Scotland international’s reported £9m switch to the AMEX from Chelsea [Sky Sports].

But after Graham Potter went the other way, Billy Gilmour has found himself out of the Brighton side and is now expected to move out on loan in January.

The likes of La Liga outfit Villarreal have been extensively linked, but Ibrox could pose an interesting option for a player who at 21-years-old now needs to be getting minutes in a competitive side.

We’ll see what happens – and perhaps Brighton won’t want to send the kid back up north – but if its a talented young midfielder Rangers need to breathe new life into the side, then Billy Gilmour ticks all the boxes.

Meanwhile, a legendary former Man United midfielder will be turning out at Ibrox come next year.
