Agent claims Rangers ‘rejected’ chance to sign £20m ace linked with big transfer

The agent of Bologna captain Lewis Ferguson has admitted that Rangers turned down the former Aberdeen ace when he was still a teenager.

Now linked with a £20 million move to some of the biggest clubs in Serie A, Lewis Ferguson is shaping up to become one of those classic ‘one that got away’ sort of situations.

Rangers showed an interest during the summer of 2021 – 12 months before he moved to Italy – and also ‘rejected’ the chance to sign the 10-time Scotland international long before he was a first-team regular at Pittodrie.

Now, with interest from elsewhere in Serie A and a host of Premier League clubs, everything points to a mega-money move somewhere down the line.

Rangers could have signed Lewis Ferguson

“Ferguson was rejected at 14 by Rangers,” Bil McMurdo, the 24-year-old’s agent, tells CalcioNapoli24.

“(He) came to me to tell me that this had not affected him at all and, in the future, he would play in Serie A. Already at 14, he had a dream of playing for Italy.”

Now the captain of a Bologna side chasing Champions League qualification under Thiago Motta, Ferguson is certainly now living that ‘dream’. Like many members of Motta’s squad – including the Manchester United-linked centre-forward Joshua Zirkzee – Ferguson is also catching the eye of the biggest clubs in the country, with the Rossoblu potentially a victims of their own recent success.

“There have been no contact with Napoli yet, but he is ready to play in the Champions League,” McMurdo adds. “He has been linked to Napoli, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Lazio, Atalanta but I have not had direct contact with them.

“Every big player can be a possibility that we will evaluate in view of next season.”

Ferguson is reportedly valued at around £20 million these days. Alongside the likes of Albert Gudmundsson, Jarrad Branthwaite and Andreas Skov Olson, the nephew of former Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson must be one of the biggest regrets in Rangers’ recent history, at least as far as the transfer market is concerned.

Philippe Clement’s side cruised into the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup on Sunday. Goals from John Lundstram and Fabio Silva saw Rangers win 2-0 at Hibernian in the quarters.
