Agent admits Premier League interest in star Rangers missed out on for £3m

One-time Rangers target Lewis Ferguson continues to show the Ibrox giants what they are missing with a number of Premier League clubs now casting their sights over the Serie A ace.

Interestingly, Lewis Ferguson isn’t even the only in-form midfielder plying his trade in Italy’s top-flight with a familial connection to Rangers.

The uncle of Albert Gudmundsson, now of Genoa, donned the famous blue kit for a spell in the 1940s. Gudmundsson could have followed in his footsteps too, had the Gers opted to pursue a deal which would have cost them just £1 million back in January 2022.

Ferguson has a former Rangers ace in his own family tree. Uncle Barry captaining the Glasgow giants to Premiership glory three times since the turn of the Century.

Rangers could have had Lewis Ferguson

Rangers, according to the Scottish Sun, showed an interest in Ferguson around the same time as Gudmundsson was blinking on their radar and, with both players now lighting up Serie A, only time will tell how much of a missed opportunity this proves to be for the men from Ibrox.

“He is extraordinary,” Ferguson’s agent, Bill McMurdo, tells Sport Italia. “(Over the summer, there was) the interest of an Italian team and a Premier League club.

“He’s not at his best level yet, but he could play in any top team.”

That ‘interest’, it seems, remains to this day.

According to TuttoSport, Fulham and Nottingham Forest have been scouting Ferguson ‘for some time’, with Bologna destined to eventually make a colossal profit on the £3 million fee they invested in a midfielder who, in the style of his idol Frank Lampard, has proven himself to be a regular source of goals from his box-to-box midfield role

Going from strength to strength in Serie A

“He plays with a certain swagger,” former Aberdeen team-mate Cristian Ramirez once told the Press and Journal. “It’s obvious when you see him when he brings that kind of swagger onto the field. He has that confidence.”

“Fergie (Lewis Ferguson) is the best box-to-box midfielder in the league.”

One day soon, could we be saying the same about Ferguson in Serie A too?
