One-time Rangers target Lewis Ferguson could be in line for a massive switch to Lazio as the Serie A giants prepare for the potential sale of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to Tuttomercatoweb

During Saturday’s 2-2 draw between Bologna and Salernitana, Ferguson took his tally to four league goals since joining the Rossoblu last summer.

As such, he is now one of only four Scotsmen ever to score over three goals in Italy’s top flight. Ferguson is in pretty good company too, joining Denis Law, Graeme Souness and former Bologna ace Aaron Hickey in the Serie A history books.

One-time Rangers target Lewis Ferguson could join a Serie A giant

The Hamilton-born midfielder has always had an eye for goal. In his final two seasons at Aberdeen, prior to that £3 million departure, Ferguson scored 26 times from his box-to-box role in the centre of the park.

Hitting the target in Scotland is one thing, however. Over the last six months, Ferguson has proven himself capable of making a difference in one of Europe’s major leagues; helping Bologna to three-point hauls against the likes of Fiorentina, Sassuolo and 2021 Serie A champions Inter.

And, less than two years after attracting bids from Watford and Millwall, the five-cap Scotland international appears to be on his way to bigger and, with all due respect, far better things.

“I know for a fact there is interest there from AC Milan and Juventus,” Ferguson’s agent tells the Daily Record.

“I’ve got people who work for me in Italy and they’ve had a few enquiries. I reckon (Bologna) will be looking for a minimum of £8m. Having said that, they sold Aaron Hickey for £20m and he only played 48 games for them.

“I think (a big move) will happen. He deserves it. He’s had to learn the language and a new culture and he’s done very well with that. He’s very professional. I’ve dealt with a lot of good players. A lot of duds too. But he’s in a class of his own.”

Big shoes to fill

In addition to AC Milan and Juventus, you can now add Lazio to the mix. Ferguson, who was a target for Rangers during the summers of 2020 and 2021, is reportedly a candidate to replace a living, breathing, playmaking Lazio legend.

Milinkovic-Savic, the long-serving Serbian, is out of contract in 2024. Dubbed the ‘best midfielder in the world’ by Lazio president Claudio Lotito, Ferguson would certainly have big shoes to fill under Maurizio Sarri at the Stadio Olimpico.
