Rewind to the summer transfer window and one of the most prominent links to Rangers concerned Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
There had been conflicting reports surrounding the ex-PEC Zwolle player in the months previously amid high-profile links in the Scottish press.

Back in January the Press Association had Rangers linked to the Brazilian-born midfielder but this was rubbished by leading fan media Heart & Hand.
“I can tell you that this [the link to Hamer] isn’t true,” said Heart & Hand host David Edgar [Daily Update 14/01/21].
“Rangers are not interested in Gustavo Hamer, he is not a player who is currently on their radar.”
However, that didn’t stop a leading English Football League transfer account on Twitter claiming the Gers were set to meet Coventry’s £4m valuation for the player.
This was after Give Me Sport claimed in July that Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff “remain keen” on the midfielder.
Needless to say, all of these claims were eventually debunked by the player himself who responded very sarcastically to claims he’d “verbally agreed” to join the Gers.
Rangers-linked Gustavo Hamer a hero for promotion-chasing Coventry
But whilst Rangers may or may not have been interested in Hamer, the Ibrox club’s loss certainly appears to be the Sky Blues gain as Coventry City emerge as unlikely promotion candidates.
Mark Robins’ side have started the season very brightly indeed and currently occupy third place in the English Championship.
Hamer’s side are level with West Brom in second place having earned 19 points from their six wins and one draw in nine games so far this season.
Ex-Netherlands youth international Hamer has played in all nine games so far this season, scoring once and laying on an assist despite his deep lying role in the side.
This includes the opener in Coventry’s convincing 3-0 win over Peterborough at the weekend and the player continues to impress in the English second tier.

Alongside Swedish international Viktor Gyökeres – who is on red-hot form with seven strikes already this season – Hamer has been a major influence on the club’s current form.
We suspect that if things keep going this way for Coventry, Rangers won’t be the only side being linked to the midfielder in the press.
Hamer is already a hero to Coventry fans and he’ll be even more so if he can help steer the club back to the Premier League for the first time in 21 years.
There’s a reason why the fans at the Ricoh Arena have been singing the player’s name so much as of late.
