2020 Rangers-linked international striker returns to UK, signs for Sheffield Wednesday

In May 2020, TEAMtalk reported that both Rangers and Celtic had been scouting the then Zulte Waregem star, while Voetbal Nieuws also credited the Gers with interest.

At that point, he was playing regularly for the Jupiler Pro League side and had netted six times in 17 league starts.

While Gers supporters weren’t overly excited by the reported interest due to concerns about Berahino’s attitude and controversial off-field behaviour, it was suggested that he was being lined up as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos.

Of course, Morelos would end up staying at Ibrox and Berahino remained in Belgium, although he did move to Charleroi on loan in October 2020.

The Burundi international only scored twice for Les Zèbres, though, and he has now returned to the UK.

Sheffield Wednesday announced his capture on a permanent deal on Tuesday afternoon, as he links up with his former West Brom manager Darren Moore.

Berahino will be playing alongside former Rangers loanee Florian Kamberi at Hillsborough, with the Swiss-born attacker moving there on loan from St Gallen earlier this summer.

Kamberi called his loan switch to Rangers from Hibernian in January 2020 a dream come true but he didn’t do enough to earn a permanent deal at Ibrox and ironically was eventually sold by Hibs to St Gallen to replace Cedric Itten, who had joined the Light Blues.

In other news, Rangers have received a big boost after a Premier League club linked with an Ibrox star confirmed an alternative signing.
