Rangers face reality check as Brighton launch £30m Abdallah Sima transfer proposal

For many Rangers fans braced for the exit of Vaclav Cerny, fellow former Ibrox loanee Abdallah Sima offered something of a comfort blanket.

Rangers might’ve failed in a bid to land Sima permanently last summer, the Senegalese forward having spent the 23/24 season at Ibrox, but this season there had been renewed optimism.

With Cerny saying his Ibrox goodbyes during the week, fresh Rangers investment from the US had plenty nudging the Gers back towards Abdallah Sima.

However, Brighton’s ambitious bid for one of Europe’s brightest young forwards delivers a stark reality check for Rangers.

The club’s heavy reliance on loan players exposes the limits of their strategy, making it difficult to compete financially, plan for the future and secure permanent deals for key talents.

Abdallah Sima central to ambitious £30m Olympiakos transfer bid

Rangers aren’t the only club linked with Abdallah Sima heading into the summer.

After Rangers’ failure to reach the Champions League in 2024, Sima signed a loan deal with Ligue 1 outfit Stade Brestois.

With a full season of Champions League football and Ligue 1 experience under his belt, the ex-Slavia Prague forward will return to the Seagulls this summer.

But the hitman is not expected to make the breakthrough at the AMEX, with Brighton ready to ship Sima out and Olympiakos waiting in the wings.

That transfer story has taken a fresh twist amid claims in the Athletic that Brighton have offered Sima to Olympiakos as part of a remarkable swap deal.

It’s reported that Brighton have their sights on 17-year-old Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas, with 23-year-old Sima offered alongside £30m in cold, hard cash.

Even if Olympiakos are expected to reject the initial proposal, Sima is clearly a strong bargaining chip in the deal and Rangers will be watching closely.

Rangers must move on from loan market reliance under US investors

Abdallah Sima is never slow to show his Rangers loyalties, but Brighton clearly have other plans for the hitman.

Vaclav Cerny too is expected to court interest from around Europe, with Rangers’ financial limitations set to hamper the club’s hopes of a permanent deal.

It’s nothing new for Rangers; PSV Eindhoven midfielder Malik Tillman is another Rangers loanee who slipped through the Ibrox club’s fingers after a year on loan from Bayern Munich.

Heck, even Wolves loanee Fabio Silva wanted a move to Rangers before going on to tear up La Liga with Las Palmas this season.

These are all good players, and we’ve been lucky to some extent to have them at Rangers, but far from being a solution to our issues, this lack of consistency is hurting the club.

It’s no surprise we’ve seen a downturn in form, particularly domestically, at the same as we’ve had an over-reliance on star loan players who take time to settle.

We’ve been unable to properly strategise our player trading potential, focusing on expensive short-term fixes which have offered little financial or competitive reward.

The gain on and off the pitch has been limited and the situation is a reminder to Rangers that the loan market is a double-edged sword.

Under Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, it’s imperative Rangers strike deals with the bigger picture in mind.
