Play, bench, sell: Cyriel Dessers, Danilo and Hamza Igamane Rangers debate settled

Patrick Stewart inherited a mess when he walked through the doors at Rangers and took charge as the club’s CEO.

His job has just become an awful lot easier though after appointing Kevin Thelwell as sporting director

It will also be helped with the San Francisco 49ers securing enough shares to complete their takeover by the end of May

Stability off the pitch always affects performance on the pitch.

The rebuild of the Rangers squad is now Thelwell’s primary and immediate concern with a variety of issues to solve.

Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane, Danilo – Play, Bench, Sell

One of them is the forward line.

Theoretically, Rangers don’t need a striker.

The problem is, with Hamza Igamane showing how good he can be and adapting to life in Scotland quicker than expected, three doesn’t go into one.

Very few clubs can afford to keep three front line strikers who are competing for one place.

Rangers should be starting Igamane. He is the most complete striker in terms of his ability to hold the ball up, run channels, link play and score goals.

The young Moroccan’s run as the main man proves this, he did very little wrong before getting moved to accommodate Cyriel Dessers

At 30-years old, Dessers isn’t going to change how he plays, so the remaining five games should have Igamane leading the line.

On the bench, should be Danilo

Not only is his ceiling higher than Dessers, he is also a more accomplished footballer.

The 26-year old will feel like he has lost two years of his career at Rangers, but he is approaching his peak years.

Danilo also has the best goal contribution per minute record of any striker in the Scottish Premiership, despite not starting a single game.

At one every 80 minutes or so, he is a more reliable contributor than Dessers.

Why Rangers should sell Dessers

Dessers, like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates, is as frustrating as he is unpredictable – you never know what you are going to get.

Over the course of a season, despite the numbers, there just isn’t the consistency of performance needed to be Rangers main man.

A Rangers striker shouldn’t be touching the ball just a handful of times in a 90-minute game.

With Igamane as the best option to start, Dessers is unlikely to want to stay and be a back up, plus, Rangers won’t want one of the biggest earners not contributing.

Hopefully, this time, he won’t reject a move after Rangers agree a deal.
