The reality that Rangers will have a truly fresh start next season has taken a step closer to reality.
The San Francisco 49ers takeover is almost secured with news of the group led by Andrew Cavenagh having reached the 51% threshold to complete the deal.
Despite the on-field disarray, progress is being made off the pitch, the sort of progress that could lay the foundations for sustained success.
Rangers fans are impatient though, will the consensus being that plans for next season can’t be made until the 49ers are in charge.
A new Rangers manager is needed, and a new sporting director is to be appointed, but how long will it take for the door to be opened for these to be made?

Rangers takeover ramps up as timeline gets confirmed
According to Chris Jack, speaking on The Rangers Review’s morning briefing of the 21st of April, close, might not be that close:
“There has been a lot of online chitter-chatter over the last couple of weeks, people saying it is going to be announced this day, why don’t they announce it for the first home game after the split, why don’t they mention it the day of the Old Firm game,” questioned Jack.
“It is not going to be announced over the next coming days so anyone who is frantically refreshing the official website, twitter and our website, right now you are wasting your time.
“We are still several weeks away from this deal being finalised and being announced. We’ve been stuck to round about the end of May throughout the process, and that is the timescale that we are still on.”
What work is going on behind the scenes at Rangers?
The good thing is, it doesn’t look like everything is on hold until the deal is complete.
There has been a representative from the 49ers group at Ibrox and away games since the end of 2024.
With the 49ers Enterprises technical director Gretar Steinsson on board to help, they are obviously already looking after their interests and drawing up a potential shortlist.
Patrick Stewart’s desire to appoint a sporting director is also encouraging because he should still be the man in charge, even once the takeover is complete.
His experience in the game gives him the right to bring someone to Rangers to assist Nils Koppen.
As with the end of the 2024/25 season though, an official announcement for the takeover can’t come quickly enough.
