Goal of the season contender should see Nils Koppen notice talent who fits Rangers transfer policy

Rangers should always be looking at other SPFL teams for local talent, especially when players are available for a cut-price compensation fee.

Lyall Cameron will arrive in the summer with Connor Barron, Liam Kelly and John Souttar all examples of how Rangers squad can be supplemented on the cheap.

Nils Koppen will target more Scottish talent and one of those should be Bobby Wales of Kilmarnock, given the impact he is now making.

Bobby Wales shows quality Rangers should be looking for

The 19-year old striker has six goal contributions in around 750 minutes of league football and is showing the sort of potential that should see the Light Blues’ recruitment department sit up and take notice.

His most recent goal, against St Johnstone, is a serious contender for goal of the season with a similarity to one scored by Brighton’s Kauro Mitoma over the same weekend.

The touch, composure and finish, was exemplary and the Rangers manager could do with having a young striker who can be developed and used as a rotation option.

With his contract expiring in the summer, Wales’ name will probably be on a post-it note somewhere in Koppen’s office.

What has Wales said about Kilmarnock contract talks?

Speaking after his goal and assist against St Johnstone, Wales confirmed that he has been talking to Kilmarnock about a new deal, but that nothing yet has been agreed, via BBC Sport:

“We’ve had chats, of course we have, because someone out contract is in demand,” the Scotland youth cap said.

“We have frequent conversations, maybe once a week even, but it’s just with where we are in the table, is that what we want to be talking about?

“It’s a close game with St Johnstone this weekend, so it wouldn’t be on my mind at all. When you have that chat so often, we’re kind of just saying the same stuff when we’re trying to focus on the present and the games.

“We do speak about it very frequently, but we’re trying our best on the pitch and that is kind of back of the mind at times, but it’s down to just how busy we are and how the game can go.”

When asked if staying at Kilmarnock was a possibility: “Yeah, because everyone knows I’m a Kilmarnock fan and I’m a local boy.

“It would be hard to go, but you need to wait and see what happens.”
