Ex-Rangers striker Jermain Defoe can’t quite put his finger on the current expectations at Tottenham Hotspur.

But when it comes to Rangers, the standards required were made abundantly clear to Jermain Defoe and his teammates.

Defoe spent two years at Ibrox and was part of the team which went on to lift 55.

The legendary former England striker also spent time working under Steven Gerrard as player/coach with Rangers.

And it’s under the Liverpool legend that Defoe has revealed the expectations of Rangers were being hammered home by those within the club.

Jermain Defoe on difference between Spurs and Rangers

Jermain Defoe was part of the Sky Sports panel alongside Gary Neville and Jamie Redknapp as Spurs beat Manchester United 1-0.

There was a discussion centred on the expectations at Tottenham over the years, with Spurs struggling this season under Ange Postecoglou.

Whilst the Australian managed to get a win over Europa League rivals United, Gary Neville probed Defoe on what the expectations were in North London during his time on the club.

The former Rangers striker claimed that whilst at Spurs the objective was the finish top four, at Ibrox things were substantially different.

Steven Gerrard ‘told’ Rangers expectations

“The objective was obviously to finish in the top four,” said Defoe when asked about the expectations at Tottenham Hotspur.

”I suppose only obviously the manager who has managed can answer that question.

”I can remember being at Rangers and Stevie actually said that.

”We’ve won the league, the next season was like ‘right, I’ve been told that we have to win the league and win a cup’.

”You know, you have to. So he put that on the players, like ‘you have to drive those sort of standards and try and do it again’.”

Jermain Defoe made 74 appearances for Rangers over two years at Ibrox, scoring 32 goals and laying on 10 assists in an impressive stint in Glasgow.

The striker would return down south to Sunderland in January 2022 when Steven Gerrard jumped ship to Aston Villa in November 2021.
