Why Kris Boyd fears Rangers star could now ‘throw toys out the pram’ after latest development

Kris Boyd was a man who didn’t enjoy being on the bench.

The Rangers hero was the main man for goals during most of his time at the club, rarely failing to find the net and breaking records along the way.

While he often had his work rate and lack of pace questioned, his ability to sniff out chances and actually finish them off was never in doubt.

But there were times when he was left on the bench for bigger games, like Old Firm derbies or European nights. And it was the same for Scotland.

That was a source of frustration for Boyd.

So if anyone is qualified to comment on the current situation with Cyriel Dessers, it his him.

The Nigerian started the season still as the main striker, with Danilo still working his way back to fitness and Hamza Igamane just in the door.

But despite continuing to find the net, those pair now appear to be preferred to him.

He could leave this month and Philippe Clement admitted discussions had taken place with Dessers over his future.

That came after the player himself said he would need to talk with Rangers chiefs to iron the situation out.

Leganes are the latest club mentioned as having an interest but they are keen for a loan while it’s claimed Rangers are pushing for a permanent transfer.

The Spaniards are part of a queue which also includes Cagliari and Empoli in Italy and Saint-Ettiene in France.

It is believed Dessers is the number one target for Serie A relegation-threatened Cagliari.

Boyd on Dessers

Kris Boyd has previously commented on Dessers and admitted his old club have a “conundrum” over whether to sell the man who keeps getting them goals when he does feature.

Boyd knows the 30-year-old will be frustrated but would never have had him down as someone who would “throw the toys out the pram.”

However, he fears that may now happen if he is relegated again despite bagging a Scottish Cup hat-trick against Fraserburgh.

Speaking via The Scottish Sun’s Go Ballistic, Boyd said: “I get the fact that he was the first choice at the start of the season, and now finds himself out. He might be frustrated but I don’t think he’s a bad boy.

“I don’t look at him and think, ‘He’s going to throw his toys out the pram’ as such but that might happen now if there’s no way of him getting him getting that jersey back.

“The way it looks, he doesn’t because Igamane is Rangers’ No.9.”

What Dessers has said about his own future

“Last month I lost my starting spot,” Dessers told Voetbal International.

“The boy who is playing now is also a good striker, he also scores. I try to support him and help him because I want the team to win. But it is difficult.

“I don’t know what my situation is now. I can imagine that Rangers might want to earn something from me this month.

“But January is a difficult window. Clubs that are doing well probably also have a striker who is performing well. And few clubs that need goals will immediately have the millions ready.

“We’ll just have to wait and see. I’m at a great club, but I’m 30-years-old and want to play every week, preferably at Rangers.

“If there are different feelings about that internally, then we need to talk.”
