Philippe Clement on Cyriel Dessers exit talks with one problem for new Rangers role

It would have been the biggest shock in Scottish Cup history if Rangers had failed to beat Fraserburgh, especially given the strength of the home side’s starting XI.

Philippe Clement was in no mood to mess about with an experimental line-up with only a couple of academy players thrown in from the first whistle by the manager.

Several key players were given a day off from the match day squad, however, Cyriel Dessers served another reminder of the role he could yet continue to play for Rangers.

Why Cyriel Dessers is perfect third choice for Rangers

With 21 goal contributions for the Ibrox outfit in 33 appearances (just short of 20 games in terms of minutes), the 30-year old striker continues to chip in with a more than respectable return.

As seen with the impact of Hamza Igamane and Danilo though, the Rangers No.9 needs to offer more than just being a target for through balls and crosses.

For a third choice, Dessers’ numbers are outstanding, however, there is one big problem.

The £27,000 per week basic wage that Salary Sport report the Nigerian international to be earning.

For context, Oscar Cortes is on £6,000 per week and Hamza Igamane £7,200, per week, and the sort of wages that Rangers should be paying, if they get recruitment right.

What has Clement said about Dessers wanting to leave Rangers?

Dessers has spoken about potentially having to leave Rangers if game time doesn’t get more regular and there has been interest from Italy already.

According to Clement, he hasn’t been banging his office door down to complain:

“We have discussions every day. No, not every day, that’s not true, but at least every week. We talk all the time.

“I think Cyriel shows that he has a desire to do everything for this club. And of course, he wants to play every game.

“It’s then showing that you’re the best. That’s working at Rangers, he knows that also really well. So that’s the situation.”

Rangers might not get the £4.5m back that they paid Cremonese, but with 52 goal contributions in 87 games, he continues to be the ultimate enigma.
