Why ex-Rangers star thinks Philippe Clement won’t be sacked as future debated

The future of Philippe Clement at Rangers will now come under the microscope once again.

The Gers boss has had such an up and down time of it with numerous occasions where poor results or runs have piled the pressure on him, before digging an improvement and hanging onto his job.

Defeat against lower league opposition in the cup, especially at Ibrox, is a different kettle of fish though.

Fans have turned on Clement at different points but the Queen’s Park defeat has them calling for his head again and it might be more difficult to come back from this one.

The Rangers manager bit back at a reporter as she asked him about his substitutions during the game and he did seem shook by the result.

Clement remained defiant on his own future after the game and insists he will not be the one walking away.

But that may be taken out of his hands with Patrick Stewart now facing decision time.

Clement Rangers future ‘back into doubt’

A debate was had on BBC Sportscene about what will now happen with the Belgian and his job.

Former Ibrox striker Billy Dodds reckons the doubt is back and Clement will now be under “huge pressure.”

The cup result on top of the underachievement in the league has ensured that.

Dodds said: “Back into doubt. He seems pretty confident in his post-match interviews that he’s going to keep his job.

“It’s not going to help him though. You can’t be knocked out the cup, you can’t be 13 points behind Celtic in the league. You lost the League Cup to your biggest rivals as well.

“It’s going to throw huge pressure on him.”

Rangers won’t sack Clement yet

But Ricky Foster is of the belief that the time has not yet come for the 50-year-old to be relieved of his duties.

Admitting there will be questions asked about where the club is headed under his management, he still feels there is time yet to salvage things.

Asked if Clement keeps his job for now, he said: “I think he does. You don’t ever want to see managers losing their job and I think he holds on to his job for now.

“But I think there will be serious questions asked in terms of the direction.

“Just when it looks like they’re sowing the seeds of a revival, of a new dawn, something like this happens. Nothing as severe as this today has happened as of yet.
