‘We have to know how to press high’ – Davide Ancelotti philosophy will be music to Rangers fans’ ears

Modern football has changed in that the manager shouldn’t be responsible for doing everything, even if Philippe Clement, Michael Beale and Steven Gerrard did when they were in charge of Rangers.

Speculation is hotting up over who will be the next Rangers manager with Davide Ancelotti now favourite to step into the Ibrox hotseat.

It would be a huge coup for Kevin Thelwell as the new sporting director, even if Ancelotti jnr is yet to take any steps out on his own and from under the shadow of his legendary dad.

With Carlo set to take over Brazil, and a new coaching team arriving at Real Madrid, Davide is looking for his first head coach role.

Davide Ancelotti gives insight into how Rangers could play

Speaking to the Training Ground Guru, the multi-lingual coach gave an encouraging insight into his mindset and how he prepares a team.

A host of Ancelotti’s former players have spoken about the influence that Davide has on the training ground and tactical influence he had on his dad.

At Everton, he was responsible for the training sessions needed to implement a game plan:

“We recognize, I mean, depends always on the opponent. You cannot decide, I will play 80 minutes on the opponent side, on the opponent half, because you never know if they are gonna press, if they are gonna stay back,” Ancelotti said when asked about his philosophy.

“So, I mean, recognise if they press what we have to do. If they press in this way, what we have to do. If they press in another way, what we have to do when we are there.

“Okay, this is like, this is, I think, a philosophy when you have the ball. You have to recognise the situation and recognise what to do in that situation.

“And without the ball is the same. Without the ball, we have to know how to press high, how to play the transitions, what to do when we are back, play as a line with the defence, all these kind of things.

“And then the system, you can change the system, of course, depending on the players that you have.”

Does Ancelotti have the experience needed for Rangers?

Flexibility is key at Rangers.

It was, arguably, the biggest flaw of Clement, Beale and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

They steadfastly refused to adjust their mindset for domestic games, particularly against the low block teams.

Ancelotti is used to challenging for titles, he is also used to setting teams up to play against defensive teams at Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid – a different level, but a familiar problem.
