One-time reported Rangers target Lawrence Shankland has hit another double as he continues his fine goalscoring form for Dundee United.

Shankland hit both goals – and had a penalty saved – as Dundee United defeated Dunfermline 2-0 to maintain their strong start to the season. They’ve won all three games and sit top of the Championship table.

The Scottish Championship may be a level below, but Shankland has now hit nine goals in seven games this season and is on rampant form for the Arabs.

Which begs the question, should Rangers have signed him to settle the 3rd striker “debate” which Steven Gerrard mentioned [the Scostman] in mid-August?

With Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe on rampant form, it would be incredibly unlikely that bluenose Shankland would be able to budge either of them.

But as a third choice striker, he would surely be able to do a job for the club – and maybe even surprise people in the process.

It’s not the first time we’ve asked this either. Shankland hit four goals in early August and it had some discussing whether it was the right or wrong move not to sign the player.

But the truth is you do not know if Shankland is capable of making that step up. Also, with game time not guaranteed at Ibrox, would the move have been the best one for his career?

Rangers were linked to the player last season [Daily Star] but there was nothing official to suggest that we’d moved for him.

But at 24, if Shankland continues to impress in Scotland and helps guide Dundee United to the Premiership, there’s still plenty of time for the striker to catch the eye of Rangers.

Can you rule out ever seeing him in a Rangers jersey?
