The idea that Rangers would be able to negotiate a transfer over the value of £20m for a player in the club’s squad would’ve seemed immensely farcical only two or three years ago.
Climbing back up from the Scottish league system after the effects of 2012 ensured that Rangers would not be able to operate in such a market for a considerable period.
But ordinarily the preserve of rivals Celtic, the mega-money being touted around some of our biggest stars is quite simply symbolic of the progress being made at Ibrox.
Not just on the pitch, but across the club from top to bottom.
Give or take a few dodgy signings – Eros Grezda perhaps standing out – Rangers have recruited wonderfully over the last two seasons.
Prior to that, the club got very little return for their investments with the failed Pedro Caixinha experiment standing out as being particularly financially detrimental.
But with the likes of Alfredo Morelos (ironically a Caixinha signing) being subject to £20m+ transfer reports linking him to Crystal Palace [Scottish Sun] and Aston Villa [Football Insider] Rangers can now command a respect in the transfer market.
The likes of James Tavernier is routinely linked with moves down south, whilst Finnish international midfielder Glen Kamara is the latest name to be linked to the Premier League [Daily Mail].
Kamara isn’t the only international either.
Borna Barisic’s emergence on the left will have surely caught more than just the watching eyes of Rangers fans, whilst countryman Niko Katic is a major asset in the making and recently signed a new deal.
Joe Aribo is a valuable asset, whilst the likes of Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Ryan Jack and Ryan Kent are just a few of the names on what’s proving to be a valuable Rangers squad.
The club must be praised for their recruitment over the course of the last 15 months and with Ross Wilson coming in as sporting director, it should only get better.
