Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hinted that a reported deal for Rennes defender Mexer could be off the table.
Speculation over Mexer exploded after Gerrard was pictured with the player in France. Reports then claimed Mexer had been “offered a deal” by Rangers and also invited to the upcoming Old Firm at Ibrox [STV].
But speaking in his pre-match press conference looking forward to the Old Firm, Gerrard touched on the transfer interest. And what the Gers boss had to say poured cold water over the move.

“I went to watch Rennes v Monaco to analyse a lot of players, bumped into numerous players after the game, and was asked for a picture,” said the Rangers boss.
“I think people are putting a lot of speculation out there.
“We are looking for centre-backs and Mexer is a good player, but what I’m led to believe is that he’ll be playing his football in France next year.
“Don’t take that as facts, that’s just what I’m hearing through the grapevine, but he is a player we admire.”

It’s certainly disappointing for fans who would have been excited by the prospect of the player joining the club. The comments also suggest Mexer won’t be coming to Ibrox for Sunday’s Old Firm match.
But Gerrard did admit Rangers are looking for reinforcements in the defensive side of the pitch.
