Some of the paper talk today centres around Alfredo Morelos and the potential for the player not to be seen in a Rangers shirt again.
A combination of Jermain Defoe’s form, Alfredo Morelos’ suspensions and ongoing transfer interest have generated doubts over the Colombian’s place in the team.
This was intensified by Steven Gerrard. And whilst there is definitely a case for Defoe retaining his place in front of Morelos, it’s important not to take the Gaffer’s comments out of context.
Gerrard was full of praise for the role of Defoe in recent matches. As well as that, he also praised his side for their recent performances. But not once did he suggest Alfredo wasn’t part of his plans.
“There’s a player playing with high confidence, creating chances and scoring goals,” said Gerrard, as quoted by BBC Scotland.
“There’s a challenge there now. That’s the way Rangers should be, we should have options – especially this area.”
“Jermain will get you goals”
“I’m not surprised by Jermain’s performance. He’s got unbelievable quality and if you play a system that suits Jermain, he will get you goals.
“He’s got the number nine shirt at the moment, it’ll be interesting how he performs from now until the end of the season.”
Gerrard is clearly excited by the real and genuine case Defoe is making for the number 9 jersey full time. But as is the case with all good players, Alfredo Morelos must now raise his game to get back in the side.
This competition is a good thing for both players and will force each of them to go to the next level. But any notion that we won’t see Alfredo Morelos again is ridiculous.
In fact, there’s every chance we’ll see an even better one when his suspension has been spent. The Colombian firebrand has already been intimating his intentions to make up for the lost time.
