Standard Liege dealt major blow ahead of Rangers clash after Cimirot ruled out

Standard warmed up for their trip to Glasgow with a 0-0 draw at Anderlecht which left them sixth in the Belgian Pro League table, 14 games into the 2020/21 season.

Cimirot played the full 90 minutes in a defensive midfield role, but it’s reported that he picked up a hamstring injury which has ruled him out of the Gers fixture.

It’s a big blow for Les Rouches, considering the Bosnia and Herzegovina international has started all four of their previous Europa League group stage matches.

He’s not the only player that manager, Phillipe Montanier, is unable to call upon, either.

His entire squad returned negative Covid-19 tests prior to travelling to the UK, but multiple first-team players – including Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and Jackson Muleka – have been unavailable for some time due to injuries.

Steven Gerrard will be hoping to secure progression to the Round of 32 and to keep pushing for top spot in Group D with a win against the Belgian club.

However, it looks unlikely that key midfielder Ryan Jack will play any part in the match after the manager labelled him a ‘major doubt’ during Wednesday’s press conference [Rangers FC Twitter].
