Serie A accolade sees Lewis Ferguson send Rangers reminder

Lewis Ferguson was a Rangers player at one point before moving on to continue his development and ending up with Bologna in the bright lights of Serie A.

There was always a good player there but few would have expected the 24-year old to be skippering a team in one of the biggest leagues in the world.

After a stunning debut season where he displayed his goalscoring prowess, Lewis Ferguson has continued where he left off for Bologna with a personal accolade to be proud of with a place in Whoscored.com’s team of the month.

Lewis Ferguson rubs Rangers nose in it again with Serie A accolade

Named by Whoscored.com in Serie A’s team of the month, the Scotland international is displaying the sort of consistency that has seen him linked with moves to Napoli and AC Milan.

There will be someone within the halls of Auchenhowie – if they are still there – kicking themselves over the decision to release 14-year old Lewis Ferguson but Bologna won’t be complaining.

They stand to make a significant profit from their reported £3m investment and can’t possibly have thought they would be getting quite as good a player as they have.

Once Ferguson got himself into the Bologna starting XI, he has never looked back, and has only gone from strength to strength with his almost throwback style of playing in midfield.

You wouldn’t say that he is a deep lying playmaker or an out and out midfield enforcer, you also wouldn’t say that he is the type to dictate the tempo of a game through his passing.

What he is, is fully committed, dynamic, a physical prescence and, perhaps more importantly, a goal threat in open play and from set pieces.

We will never know if Aberdeen would have dealt with Rangers as easily as they dealt with Bologna or if the £3m fee would have been inflated.

As shown by his recent form, and as one of the most consistent performers in Serie A, even for an extra million or two, he still would have been worth the money.
