Rangers rejection to Juventus target for international star

Lewis Ferguson looked every bit the international footballer when he played for Scotland against France, another indication that Rangers were wrong to release him as a youngster.

Age just 14 when he moved to Hamilton to continue his football career, the Bologna skipper has more than proved that he could have followed in his father and uncle’s footsteps.

Barry Ferguson, speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, has revealed just how gutted Lewis Ferguson was when Rangers set him free.

Lewis Ferguson’s Rangers rejection explained

Most of the talk when the 24-year old’s name comes up is that we should have signed him when he was at Aberdeen.

Personally, I think we should have signed him when he left Hamilton and the regular game time at such a young age obviously accelerated his development.

When asked about his nephews rise to prominence, Barry couldn’t help but recall the decision that played a key part in making him the player he is today:

“Listen, it was tough for him as a young boy getting let go by Rangers. That was his team.

You can go one or two ways. He decided to go to Hamilton, he worked hard and forced his way in as a young boy and did really well by getting that move to Aberdeen.”

Linked with a move to Juventus, Lewis Ferguson is way out of our price range now and the reported £3m that Bologna paid would probably have had the standard “Rangers Tax” added onto it were we to have bid.

Scoring goals in Serie A is notoriously difficult, and yet, in his first season, the box to box midfielder score more than Paul Gascoigne managed in his whole spell at Lazio.

There is a reason why a European super power is eyeing him and he is rated as highly as £8m.

Comparisons to Derek and Barry don’t really add up but it is another namesake who he is most similar too.

Ian Ferguson was powerful, could score goals and was a great passer of the ball, Lewis shares a lot of these traits and it is only a surprise that he hasn’t seen more minutes for Scotland.
