Rangers-linked midfielder Lewis Ferguson is reportedly being lined up for a £15m move to Serie A champions Napoli after impressing since moving to Italian side Bologna.

According to the Scottish Sun, who’re quoting reports in Italy, Lewis Ferguson is a wanted man and could well make the move to Rangers’ Champions League opponents Napoli.

This comes after a stellar first season in Italy, where the former Aberdeen star, 23, netted seven Serie A goals from midfield in an impressive debut campaign in the country.

It’s not the first time Lewis Ferguson has been linked with one of Italy’s biggest clubs either; the likes of AC Milan and Juventus have previously been mentioned before these links to Napoli.

Rangers legend Mark Hateley even claimed that AC Milan were having discussions about the midfielder at the top level of the club as the Ibrox side potentially rue letting the midfielder leave Scotland.

“I am on a group chat with Paolo Maldini, and believe me, those sort of people are aware of Lewis Ferguson and how well he is playing,” said Hateley.

Bologna director Giovanni Sartori has also been quoted in the report as claiming Lewis Ferguson will be going nowhere amid the links elsewhere, the midfielder an important part of the club’s squad for season 23/24.

“I’m not afraid of receiving phone calls for Lewis Ferguson this summer because he is part of the Bologna 2023/2024 technical project,” said Sartori. “That is confirmed.”

Rangers violin as Lewis Ferguson linked to Napoli

Rangers fans have always been split on Lewis Ferguson but no-one can deny the progress the young midfielder has made since leaving Aberdeen for Bologna in a £3m deal last summer.

The Gers have been extensively linked to Lewis Ferguson throughout his career due to the fact he is the son of former Ibrox midfielder Derek, the nephew of treble-winning Rangers captain Barry, and a boyhood bluenose.

Those links will likely continue throughout the midfielder’s career and we don’t believe the ship which would take Lewis Ferguson to Ibrox has sailed for the final time.

But at such an interesting juncture in his career, and in Rangers’ rebuild, how the club could’ve used the homegrown hero who continues to go from strength-to-strength on the continent.

Lewis Ferguson to Napoli might not happen of course, but the fact he’s even in the discussion shows the profile of the player Rangers missed out on last summer.
