Serhou Guirassy might not be a name that means an awful lot to Rangers supporters.

But as the Guinean striker nets his 10th goal of the Champions League season for Borussia Dortmund, it’s a reminder of Rangers’ place in the footballing food chain.

The 28-year-old hitman has carved out quite a career for himself since moving to Germany and earned a £15m switch to Dortmund this summer.

But there was a moment during Guirassy’s time in France where the lethal hitman might’ve wound up at Ibrox.

Serhou Guirassy is Champions League’s top scorer

Serhou Guirassy was on inspired form as Borussia Dortmund thumping Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League playoff round.

The lethal striker netted his 10th Champions League goal of a productive first season in the competition with the Germans to give Dortmund a second half lead in Portugal.

And the striker provided an assist for Pascal Gross to score a second and set the foundation for an eventual 3-0 romp in Lisbon.

The goal means that Serhou Guirassy is this season’s top scorer in the Champions League, the hitman’s record of ten strikes in nine games the envy of European football.

But as the Guinean forward outscores the likes of Robert Lewandowski (9) and Erling Haaland (8), Rangers fans might be wondering what if.

Rangers wanted to sign Serhou Guirassy

That’s because back in January 2020 reports in France had linked Rangers with a move for Serhou Guirassy during the striker’s time with Amiens.

Courrier Picard claimed that Rangers were one of a number of clubs interested in the hitman with the Gers eventually priced out of a deal.

Six months later Rangers instead plunged for Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, whilst Guirassy completed a move to Rennes in a deal worth up to £13.5m.

Those sorts of transfer fees are a reminder of Rangers’ place in the footballing food chain with the club unable to compete with the top five leagues in Europe.

But it’s also a reminder of the club’s failings in the transfer market over the last few seasons, with Guirassy one of a number of high-profile players who slipped through the net.

Xavi Simons is another.
