‘Rarely works’ – Rangers fans ‘on the fence’ about new manager option as Ibrox rumours spread like wildfire

Rangers fans are keeping a keen eye on who might be appointed the club’s next permanent manager come the end of the season.

James Tavernier has backed Barry Ferguson but the current interim Rangers manager has been unable to convince the bulk of the Ibrox support over the last two months.

With the US takeover of Rangers agreed, 49ers Enterprises technical director Gretar Steinsson will play a role at Rangers in deciding the club’s next boss.

Rangers have gone through four permanent managers in four years, with Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and Philippe Clement overseeing a steady decline.

But amid swirling rumours that one former Rangers manager could be about to return to the hallowed office at Ibrox, it’s certainly got fans chatting online.

Former Rangers manager tops Ibrox discussions

There’s plenty of discussion over who might come into the manager’s job at Rangers but so far there is no clear front runner.

The 49ers are keeping tight-lipped over who will come into the job in Glasgow, with Rangers also set to appoint a new sporting director before turning their attentions to the hot seat.

Jose Mourinho’s name was doing the Rangers rounds this week with the legendary Portuguese manager coming face to face with the Gers earlier in the season.

Mourinho also admitted he’d consider Rangers should his own personal circumstances allow it.

But there is one name mentioned more than any other who is causing a stir on social media this week as rumours spread about the possible return of Steven Gerrard.

Rangers fans react to Steven Gerrard rumours

Gerrard took charge of Rangers in 2018, built the club up to become a European force and Scottish Premiership champions before jumping ship for Aston Villa in November 2021.

Rangers fans are largely split on a move for the former Ibrox gaffer after his tumultuous exit proceeded the years of pain the club’s support have suffered domestically.

That’s not a problem for some however, with Gerrard’s potential return exciting plenty of fans on social media.

One fan suggested that he’d have ‘no issue’ with Gerrard returning to Rangers but caveated that by saying ‘under no circumstances’ should Michael Beale join him.

This is a common opinion, with another fan adding that whilst he ‘loves’ Gerrard he doesn’t want the Scouser’s former Ibrox assistant ‘anywhere near’ the club again.

Others are certainly not so convinced of Gerrard’s credentials.

This fan, like the wider Rangers support, also appears to be torn on the issue.

The choice might be taken out of Rangers’ hands anyway; Gerrard has suggested he wants a break from football after leaving Al-Ettifaq earlier in the season.
