Jose Mourinho and Steven Gerrard considered but Rangers manager verdict depends on one factor

The shortage of obvious candidates means that a void is being filled on who could be the next Rangers boss.

It could well be that Rangers’ takeover by the San Francisco 49ers is completed before an announcement is made with Patrick Stewart also wanting a sporting director in place.

Gretar Steinsson is helping Rangers in the hunt and will be tapping into all of his resources as the 49ers technical director.

The popular names from previous recruitment campaigns include Frank Lampard and Kevin Muscat, both of whom continue to be successful in their current roles.

What would be more box office though, is the arrival through the doors of Ibrox of either Steven Gerrard or Jose Mourinho, the two names doing the rounds on social media.

Jose Mourinho and Steven Gerrard rumours persist for Rangers

Speaking to Talksport, Ally McCoist reckons that both managers have the profile and personality to cope with the pressure, but that something more important needs to be addressed:

“Yes, I think both could fit the bill in terms of stature and what they’d bring to the club and Scottish football in general,” McCoist said.

“But they’d both need proper financial backing. The current squad just isn’t strong enough.

“It’s absolutely vital that his (Gerrard) next job is the right one. It didn’t quite work out at Villa or in Saudi Arabia.

“It’s similar to Frank Lampard—his move to Coventry has been crucial in getting his managerial career back on track.

“Steven’s in that same position. His next step needs to be spot on.”

Do Rangers need a coach or a figurehead?

McCoist is right, there might be questions about tactics and style of play, however, they don’t come much bigger in the world of football than Mourinho or Gerrard.

Bizarrely though, his point about the Rangers squad just doesn’t add up.

Rangers are winning the head to head record with Celtic this season and should have won the first trophy of the season.

They also reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League with one of the hardest fixture lists.

With Celtic strolling to another treble, it couldn’t be more obvious what Rangers need.

It isn’t a big name, it is a manager with a proven, aggressive and attacking style of play.

This narrows the list down considerably, but that’s why those at the top of the club are paid the big bucks, to find the right manager and to make the right decision.
