Rangers signing will have to pull their socks up after losing possession 27 times in local derby

Rangers are going to have a busy summer transfer window with whoever replaces Barry Ferguson likely to be handed another transition job.

Nils Koppen will lead the way with gaps in the Rangers squad from front to back and in plenty of areas down the sides as well.

Patrick Stewart wants a sporting director in place before the next Rangers manager is appointed, but the uncertainty won’t help trying to persuade new recruits that Ibrox is the place to be.

For players in the SPFL, this sale might be a little easier given the step up in wages and regular access to European football.

As seen by Lyall Cameron signing for Rangers and achieving his dream move, there is a lot to pitch to prospective new recruits, however, the Dundee man has a long way to go if he is to be a regular in front of 50,000 fans every other week.

Lyall Cameron has a lot to learn to be Rangers success

The same could be said of Connor Barron this time last year and yet he has been pivotal in the last 10 days in an understated midfield role.

Scotland youth cap Cameron has an almost identical record to Parkhead hero Mohamed Diomande in terms of the Scottish Premiership.

With five goals and four assists, the 22-year old has a goal contribution almost every three games, but as his Dundee derby display demonstrated, there is work to be done.

Unlike Barron, Cameron, who Barry Ferguson was delighted to see his former club sign, won’t be expected to be a first pick as soon as he collects his gear.

How bad was Cameron’s performance against Dundee Utd?

In most domestic games, Rangers dominate possession, they need midfielders who are hybrids, capable of scoring goals, creating assists, but also of going box-to-box in European games too.

Cameron had 29 touches in the Tayside derby but completed just 15 passes, losing possession 27 times.

He did though, make two key passes and was unlucky not to score the opening goal with the type of run that Diomande made so effectively against Celtic.

There is also the need to dominate physically, a problem previously labelled at Rangers midfield and with only three duel successes out of nine, Cameron will need to get on the weights.
