Rangers “target” Premier League defender amid reports of rejected bid

Rangers have once again been linked with a move for Nottingham Forest defender Jonathan Panzo as reports linking the club to Leeds United‘a Charlie Cresswell cool.

The Daily Record claim that 22-year-old Panzo remains a Rangers “target” this summer, the England youth international familiar with Micheal Beale from his time in the Chelsea youth academy.

Having spent last season on loan at Coventry City, who narrowly missed out on Premier League promotion through the Championship playoffs to Luton Town.

Rangers have been extensively linked all summer long and the Record report merely re-establishes the interest in a week where it had been claimed the Ibrox side’s radar had bleeped on a different target.

There were reports that Rangers have had a bid rejected for Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell, another England youth international who impressed on loan in the Championship last season.

Turning out for Millwall, the defender is now back at Elland Road and is expected to play a role in their second flight campaign next season following their relegation from the Premier League.

But whilst reports in the Rangers Review didn’t touch on the talk of a reported bid specifically, the outlet claimed that Charlie Cresswell is not an active Rangers target.

Couple this with the Daily Record’s claims on Jonathan Panzo and suddenly the centre-back looks to be the man Rangers want to reinforce a defensive set-up which crumbled last season.

All four first-choice centre-backs in Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar and Filip Helander suffered badly with injury last season and it had a dramatic impact on the campaign.

With Filip Helander released, and doubts surrounding the future of Ben Davies, the position is expected to be reinforced with a repeat of this season’s issues inexcusable.

Adding Jonathan Panzo might help bolster the club’s defensive options, but Rangers fans will also expect some extra reinforcement even if Charlie Cresswell is reportedly not a target.
