Reported Rangers target Mexer has been compared to former Ibrox cult hero Jean-Alain Boumsong.
The big French defender signed for Rangers on a pre-contract in 2004 and completely stole the show in Scotland.
Physical, commanding and incredibly comfortable on the ball, Rangers made an £8m profit on the player only six months later when he joined Newcastle.

And former Hearts goalkeeper Giles Rousset has compared the big Mozambican to the former Gers icon.
“I know Jean-Alain quite well because he played for Lyon and Mexer is probably similar to him but maybe even sharper and even stronger,” said Rousset, as quoted in the Daily Record.
“He is more aggressive than Boumsong but if Rangers supporters are looking for a comparison then he is that kind of player.
“Mexer is good in the air but he can play with the ball. He’s a defender first and foremost and in that sense quite similar to Boumsong.
“If Rangers can sign him on a free transfer then it would be a great piece of business because he is a very good player.”

It’s an interesting take from someone who clearly knows Mexer and what he can bring to Ibrox. Rousset’s comments will surely only whet the appetite further for Rangers fans to get the deal done.
Mexer was recently pictured with Steven Gerrard as reports intensify about Rangers interest in the Stade Rennais defender.
One report, from a French journalist, claims the deal is “getting closer” to completion.
