Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has dropped the biggest hint yet that he’s set for the Ibrox exit door when his contract expires in the summer, despite the club wanting to keep him around.
The talented stopper has found himself on the fringes at Rangers for the last 18 months due to the form of legendary Gers keeper Allan McGregor since Greegsy returned to the club.
It means the likeable Wes has been forced to sit on the sidelines for much of Steven Gerrard’s reign and speaking to the press after appearing against Stranraer, he revealed it could be one of his final appearances.
“It has been very frustrating,” said Foderingham [Herald].
“It’s difficult because Greegsy’s been playing so well. He hasn’t given me a chance to get back in there and the gaffer has a job to do, to pick a side.
“When I’m picked, I do the best I can do and I work hard in training. That’s all I can really do. He’s been very consistent.
“Even against Stranraer, if I kept a clean sheet, scored a hat-trick and saved a few penalties, I’m still not going to get a game next week. It’s one of those.
“My deal’s up in the summer. I’ve had informal talks with the club but, ultimately, I want to play, so I think we’ll get this window out of the way and see where we are.
“The manager spoke to me earlier in the season, we haven’t spoken much since then.
“He said to me ‘if you want to stay around, then we’ll be glad to have you around, if you want to move, then we’ll see what we can do’. He’s happy to have me here as long as I’m happy to be here.
“It looks like I’m going to be here until the end of the season at least and we’ll take it from there once we get there.
“They know my position and I think we’ll need to have another discussion but, ultimately, I want to play, so read into that what you will.
“I’ve enjoyed the past couple of seasons and we’ve had relative success.
“The club has moved forward, the club is in a better position now, but, ultimately, those two years could have been better spent.”
A frustrating two years for rarely featured Fods
Allan McGregor’s exceptional form for Rangers – despite being the ripe old age of 37 – has seen Foderingham, 28, be forced to watch on from the side-lines.
Since Greegsy returned to the club, Foderingham has been limited to only 13 appearances in a Rangers shirt (five this season, eight last season).
A talented keeper in his own right, it was always going to be hard to dislodge McGregor.
With the Rangers icon signing a one-year contract extension at the club, it appears Foderingham would have to wait at least another year for his chance at Ibrox.
Even then, there are no guarantees.
With the likes of Middlesbrough and Birmingham City [Daily Mail] credited with an interest down south and MLS side DC United [Daily Mail] routinely linked to the stopper, he should have plenty of options.
Signed from Swindon under Mark Warburton in 2015 and making 143 appearances in total for Rangers, should he move on come May he’ll go with the support’s full blessing and gratitude.
