Rangers loanee Chris McKee scored his first professional goal on Tuesday for Brechin City as their dire 17-game winless streak finally came to an end.

McKee is highly rated at Ibrox and was the Rangers B team top goalscorer over the first half of the season.

He was rewarded with a contract extension in November 2020 before heading to Glebe Park in March for his first loan spell.

The Northern Ireland youth international would have been determined to make an instant impact, but it’s been tough going in a team rooted to the bottom of the SPFL.

He was sent off for two bookable offences in a 4-2 defeat to Albion Rovers earlier this month, but he bounced back and got off the mark in professional football in his ninth appearance with the opening goal in a 2-0 win at Cowdenbeath on Tuesday night.

The 19-year-old pounced on a fluffed clearance from a Blue Brazil defender in the ninth minute, before swiveling and firing into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.

His delight was clear in his celebration and a second-half strike from Bobby Barr wrapped up the City’s first win since October.

It ensures that a dire run has come to an end for Michael Paton’s side, but they still look set to come bottom of League Two, as they are eight points behind Cowdenbeath with only three fixtures remaining.

As yet, it’s unclear whether or not they will subsequently take part in a playoff against either the champions of the Highland or Lowland League, with the fixture scrapped last season.

Two other Gers prospects are also on loan at Brechin: centre-back Harris O’Connor (ten appearances) and right-back Adam Devine (eight appearances).

In other news, Rangers are said to be eyeing a £5m-rated midfielder, while they have also reportedly registered interest in a Premier League player.
