According to The Sun, Rangers have registered interest in Newcastle United player Jacob Murphy, but they face plenty of competition, with the Magpies keen to keep the wide man and Watford lining up a £6m bid.

Rangers have been linked with Murphy on several occasions this season, with the Chronicle and journalist Pete O’Rourke amongst those to report Gers interest.

The former England U21 international, who has one year remaining on his current deal, has become increasingly important to Newcastle manager Steve Bruce as the season has worn on, making 26 appearances in all competitions.

He has spent most of his career as a winger but has been used mainly as a wing-back this season.

The Sun reports that the Toon are keen to tie the 26-year-old down to a new deal and will kickstart negotiations once their Premier League status has been secured.

It’s stated that Watford are set to test their resolve with a £6m bid in the summer, though, while the Gers, Southampton and Burnley have also registered their interest.

It looks as though there’ll be plenty of competition to land Murphy, and that’s hardly surprising given his impressive form in a new role this season.

However, it remains to be seen if Rangers want him enough to be dragged into a bidding war.

Steven Gerrard is well-stocked at right-back with James Tavernier and Nathan Patterson both tied down to long-term contracts, but no player has really made the right inside forward berth their own in the way that Ryan Kent has on the left.

Perhaps, if Murphy does decide he wants a new challenge in the summer, the lure of potential Champions League football at Ibrox could work in the Gers’ favour.

In other news, a rapid reported Rangers target is reportedly undergoing a medical at an EFL Championship club.
