Formerly linked Rangers striking target Lawrence Shankland has picked up the Championship’s Tartan Ball award for being the top scorer in the division this season.
Shankland managed 25 strikes in an incredibly prolific season at Ayr United. He may yet also have a big hand in the Ayrshire outfit making it to the Premiership next season.
But have Rangers got bigger fish to fry than the seaside town’s star striker?
There’s no doubt the player has had a superb season for the Honest Men and the mere fact they’re in the Championship playoffs is a major achievement. Without Shankland’s goals, Ayr United would’ve surely struggled this year.
Linked to both Rangers and Celtic earlier in the year [Daily Star], Shankland’s form in the first half of the season has him also linked with the likes of Sunderland.
And with his contract expiring at the end of the season, Ayr chief Lachlan Cameron said he was resigned to losing the player [Evening Times].
But Steven Gerrard has spoken consistently about the need for quality [Rangers.co.uk]. With the promise of Premier League quality coming to Ibrox, Shankland would somewhat fall short of the fan’s expectations.
