It is no secret that Rangers are now cutting their cloth accordingly with Philippe Clement being the man in charge that takes the hit.
Every manager before him in recent seasons has had a bigger budget to spend on their squad, but a £17m loss and years of failure has seen the club decide that enough is enough.
Players will now be bought for the good of Rangers, not the man in the Ibrox hotseat, with the fans being told not to expect much action in the closing hours of the window.
Rangers set to frustrate Philippe Clement as transfer deadline nears
According to STV’s Raman Bhardwaj, it is going to take a change of fortunes for any new faces to be presented now:
“Rangers have been working to bring in a winger, but barring last minute change this now looks unlikely.”
Patrick Stewart said that there would be “one or two” through the door, but that number looks like being the lower of the two with just Rafael Fernandes confirmed.
Lyall Cameron has signed a pre-contract agreement, however, as stated by Rangers and Dundee, he won’t arrive until the summer.
Clement must be fuming, even if he will present a united front and keep his cards close to his chest.
At the last count; he has just three senior central midfielders in Nicolas Raskin, Connor Barron and Mohamed Diomande, two wingers in Vaclav Cerny – who is on loan – and Ianis Hagi, who is out of contract in the summer.
At No.10, the Gers boss has Nedim Bajrami struggling to make an impact and Tom Lawrence, who is out of contract in the summer too.
Why have Rangers left Clement so short of players?
January is never a great time to do business, but these issues have all been known for some time.
There is almost no resilience in the squad now despite players like Bailey Rice and Findlay Curtis being promoted from the academy.
The next tier of youth players that would be trusted have all been sent out on loan.
Nobody thought it would be easy, however, Clement simply isn’t getting the help that he needs.
