Rangers handed Old Firm boost as injured star expected to be fit

Injured Rangers defender Filip Helander has been pulled out of the Sweden squad for their upcoming internationals as a precaution after picking up a “light injury”.

But according to the Scottish Sun, the on-form defender is not a major injury doubt for the forthcoming Old Firm match with Celtic.

Swedish national team manager Janne Andersson revealed that Helander would not travel with the Sweden squad to Russia as he does not have time to recover in time for the match.

Naturally this has some fans fearing whether the on-form defender will be fit for the upcoming Old Firm match in ten days time but there is no official suggestion this is the case.

“Filip will not go to Russia,” said Andersson [Scottish Sun].

“He came in with an injury that was very light, but it did not go away. He can go home and rehabilitate himself at home instead.

“We see that he does not have time to complete this recovery in full.”

The fact Helander has been sent home will also come as a boost to Rangers fans who do not want to see their star players injured ahead of the game.

The time back in Glasgow will allow Helander the chase to recover from the injury whilst also potentially protecting him catching the coronavirus in transit to games.

As it stands, summer Rangers signing Kemar Roofe and talented midfielder Joe Aribo are the only major injury doubts for the match, alongside long-term absentee Nikola Katic.

Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic are having their own injury problems going into the match, with winger James Forrest definitely out and striker Albian Ajeti facing a race against time to be fit.

Celtic will also be missing Ryan Christie for the match – who is self-isolating after being exposed to the virus – whilst there are doubts over star striker Odsonne Edouard who has tested positive.
