Rangers Old Firm boost as Scottish FA confirm Celtic star ruled out

Rangers have been handed an Old Firm boost ahead of the first meeting of 2020 with their bitter rivals with the news Ryan Christie will miss the Parkhead clash.

The Celtic forward will have to self-isolate or 14 days as a result of Scotland team-mate Stuart Armstrong returning a positive Covid-19 test ahead of the upcoming international triple-header.

All of the other members of Steve Clarke’s squad, including Rangers trio Ryan Jack, Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie have all returned negative tests.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has admitted he is disappointed with the news of Armstrong’s positive test with a crucial Euro 2020 playoff semi-final against Israel tomorrow.

“While this is obviously disappointing news the most important thing is the health and safety of the individuals involved and the wider group,” Clarke said.

“As soon as we were informed of the positive test, the Chief Medical Consultant immediately contacted the Scottish Government’s clinical adviser, who in turn alerted the local Health Protection Team.

“We have informed the respective clubs from whom we have borrowed the players and backroom staff and we now have to prepare for a huge match ahead tomorrow.”

Rangers could head into the Old Firm with a real advantage with Christie joining James Forrest on the sidelines and Odsonne Edouard testing positive while on France under-21 duty.
