Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their surprise after a leading Scottish journalist defended Alfredo Morelos amid abuse from rival fans.

The Ibrox talisman is regularly berated by opposition supporters and the press to a level which no other player in the country is subjected to.

The abuse has ranged from constant booing and taunting to banners about the player’s mother and racial slurs.

It’s something which has been regularly called out by the Ibrox support and the club’s fans have commended the Daily Record’s Gary Ralston for calling the abuse out in his latest column.

The column calls out the disgraceful abuse Morelos has suffered during his short time in Scotland and points to the humble character behind the player.

Despite perpetual condemnation from the press and rival fans, kind-hearted Morelos donated Christmas presents to disadvantaged children in his home region in Colombia through a foundation set-up to support the people who supported him growing up.

The stirring column from Ralston also highlights the jarring abuse Morelos has received in his private life off the field since being in Scotland.

There are incidents both at home and abroad which we have taken no pleasure in highlighting in the past.

That’s before we talk about the coin throwing, the Bovrils and the unwarranted bile Morelos is regularly subjected to at grounds up and down the country.

Fans took to Twitter to applaud Ralston for his comments, despite a predictable backlash from our rivals across the city.

Alfredo Morelos joined Rangers from HJK Helsinki back in 2016, with the Colombian moving to the Finnish outfit from his home country as a teenager.

Morelos continues to be a fan favourite at Ibrox and has largely curbed the reactionary behaviour which has marred his time in Scotland.

Whatever your take on the abuse he receives, the evidence points to the striker learning to deal more readily with it.
