Rangers fans and their Celtic rivals have been praised in the last couple of days for their average attendances.
The two clubs took pride of place in the top 20 in world football [originally CIES Football Observatory], once again reiterating the passion both sets of fans hold for their clubs.

Rangers finished 18th (49,054), whilst Celtic pipped us to 16th (49,697) by about 600 fans on average. But the results don’t tell the full story.

Rangers fans filled out an amazing 96.5% of their 50,817 stadia on average. By comparison, our Celtic rivals only filled out 81.7% of their 60,832 stadia.
That’s a massive 14.8% of a difference. So whilst Ibrox is filled to the brim every week, Celtic Park has plenty of empty seats. Even if there are more people turning out on average. At least during the respective periods outlined in the report.
Would Rangers fans fill out a bigger stadium? Probably, but you can’t say definitively. There’s a very real prospect of stadium expansion and this is something the Board must consider as the years go by.

Of course, victory on the pitch is much more important at the time being. But it is an interesting comparison between Rangers and the club’s Celtic rivals.
Celtic have the bigger stadium but can’t appear to fill it every week. Ibrox, by comparison, is about bursting at the seams.
