The comments of BBC Scotland chief sportswriter Tom English on Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack have been turning quite a few heads this week.
Talking on BBC Sportsound [BBC Sportsound 09/19/19], English berated Jack for “breaking down” on the pitch, saying “the optics of that were not good”.
It led the likes of Jack’s former teammate Jamie Langfield to leap to the defence of the midfielder [Twitter].
In these politically charged times, there’s a real case here that English praising the machoism of Scott Brown over Jack’s emotional response is tired and dated.
Jack simply expressed how he was feeling on the pitch and whatever you say about that, it shows that the midfielder certainly cares.
English’s approach towards Rangers and in discussions with Rangers is well known and it would be a serious disappointment if he’d crossed these lines to get a cheap shot at a Gers player.
It’s been one of the dominant areas of discussion at the beginning of this week and Bluenoses have had their say on the poor taste of English’s comments.
The comments were poorly timed and by-and-large every supporter, on both sides of the Old Firm divide, felt they were wholly inappropriate.
It’s not the first time Tom’s said something inappropriate concerning Rangers either.
Is it truly that big an ask that the chief sportswriter of BBC Sport Scotland behaves professionally when covering Rangers?
