Rangers can bank nearly £1m if they make this Rabbi Matondo decision

There is a lot of work that needs to be done by Kevin Thelwell and Nils Koppen if Rangers are to be in good shape when next season kicks off.

With a Rangers squad that is imbalanced and lacking quality throughout the spine, it will take more than one or two signings to close the gap at the top of the table.

One of the other issues is moving on the players who simply aren’t good enough for Rangers, with the hope being that more than £800,000 can be raised this summer.

Front and centre of the queue to leave Ibrox for good should be Rabbi Matondo who will return to Auchenhowie for pre-season training after it emerged that Hannover won’t be taking up their £1m option to buy the winger.

The wings are probably the weakest area of Rangers’ whole squad just now.

What options do Rangers have on the wings?

Aside from Matondo, who can never stay fit for more than a handful of games, there is Ross McCausland and Oscar Cortes.

McCausland would run himself into the ground for Rangers, but he is a 4th or 5th choice backup at best and if he didn’t tick the UEFA quota box, would probably be moved on too.

Then there is Cortes, he has all the potential in the world when you consider his performances at the Under-20 World Cup and Copa America of 2023, but the last 18-months have been hell for him.

Staying fit is his priority before he can even think about rediscovering form.

What should Rangers do with Rabbi Matondo?

As for Matondo, with just a year left on his contract, the priority is now to move him out regardless of fee or type of deal.

The Wales international is on over £20,000 a week according to Salary Sport which is the sort of money that guaranteed starters who can play 50 games should be on.

If Rangers can sell the 24-year old and get a fee, perfect, if not, the next best thing is to loan him out for the season, so around £1m worth of wages can be saved.

On paper, Matondo seemed like a good idea when Ross Wilson signed him, however, the days of relying on players who can’t stay fit has to end.
