Philippe Clement has had his say on Rangers’ meagre £800,000 of transfer intake from the club’s official figures.

The small amount was confirmed by members of the board at the AGM earlier this week having previously been released in the annual numbers.

It was a figure which came as a shock to supporters who had expected to see a substantial amount more from sales of the likes of Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers and others over the course of the year.

Some supporters and pundits questioned the number and Clement was asked to discuss earlier today when he met the press whether or not the fanbase had the right to be surprised.

Now the Belgian has expressed his opinion on the situation and looked to offer some clarity on the numbers.

Clement revealed some of the reasons behind the lack of income from transfer fees as he explained that some players did not have the interest within the market to go for decent cash.

And their wages may also have put off potential buyers of Rangers‘ stars.

“That’s a hard one for me to say because it’s not my job to do that first,” Clement said when asked about the financials.

Rangers only raked in £800k from transfer fees according to their annual figures

“Secondly, there’s also maybe something to do with the wages that players were earning here and every player now is the same, you always want to earn more and more and more and not to reduce your wages so maybe because of that some players and that’s the dangerous thing because if I say one thing then you guys take everything of all that group on the same way.

“So every story has its own thing in that, some were older, some were maybe earning a lot of money that other teams don’t want to pay that. Because of that it’s clear that the players were not really big in the market that everybody wanted to sign them so that creates also that you have less leverage in those negotiations.”

The Light Blues’ transfer policy has changed in recent windows with spending small to sell big becoming the clear strategy.

What Clement has said about the Rangers transfer policy

And Clement reiterated the plan.

“Because if you sign a player 28, 29, 30 years old and you give him a contract for two, three years, four years or five years and then some players still had contracts also, you know you don’t have added value so you see all the business of football, those things become more difficult.

“All the clubs, is it Rangers, is it Europe, it was in Monaco the same, they changed the system in that way, getting more younger players improves the thing, so it’s a logical thing, so in that way it’s more difficult to sell players who are at a certain age, so those are things you need to take in consideration also.”
