Bluenose who left Rangers in 2020 on brink of EFL promotion following superb campaign

Former Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty is on the brink of promotion from EFL League One with Hull City in his first season after leaving Ibrox.

Docherty realised a lifelong ambition by signing for his boyhood club from Hamilton Accies back in January 2018, but his stint with the Gers was a relatively unhappy one.

Although he received opportunities under Graeme Murty soon after joining the club, he barely featured following the appointment of Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard brought in his own signings like Scott Arfield, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo and Glen Kamara, and Docherty couldn’t get a look in.

When impressive loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian didn’t improve his position, he decided last summer that it was time to move on.

Hull City fans were delighted when their club stumped a reported £400,000 to sign the 24-year-old [Hull Live] and he’s proved to be a superb acquisition.

The Tigers were targeting automatic promotion back to the Championship at the start of the campaign and they are now on the verge of achieving it, with Docherty playing a major part in their strong form to this point.

He has only missed two League One matches, through injury, and has started the other 41, scoring five goals and registering four assists.

Those are decent numbers from a central midfielder who also does a lot of work in terms of breaking up opposition play and initiating attacks.

He’s played every minute of Hull’s impressive ongoing 12-match unbeaten run and now they stand just one victory away from promotion with three fixtures remaining.

A win at Lincoln City on Saturday would see Grant McCann’s side return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Having got this far, Docherty will no doubt be determined to help his team get over the line as he sets about trying to make it to the highest level possible.

In other news, Rangers have reportedly received a big transfer boost in their bid to sign a pacy international.
