Philippe Clement makes striker claim after Rangers transfer rumours

There were calls for Rangers to add another striker along with Fabio Silva in the January transfer window but Philippe Clement had hinted previously why we might not need one.

The Gers boss has only ever played the 21-year old as a central number nine in rotation with Cyriel Dessers and proved his credentials with a maiden goal at Ibrox

Rangers squad is looking better but the concerns about depth up front are justified, although Philippe Clement has just suggested that help could be on the way despite rumours during the window.

Rangers striker could give Philippe Clement injury boost

Injuries to Abdallah Sima and Danilo have dented the Light Blues title hopes.

As a team that doesn’t spend a lot of money, replacing two players who cost a combined fee in the region of £12m is no easy task.

Rabbi Matondo has stepped up with numbers in recent games and Ross McCausland is chipping with assists too.

Oscar Cortes and Mohamed Diomande are both capable of providing an end product in the final third too but neither are strikers.

One man who is, is Kemar Roofe.

As with Ryan Jack, Roofe’s injury history means that we can’t rely on him to be available every game but, he won’t be needed every game.

The goalposts have moved.

What we need him for is to be available to provide back up or an option off the bench if we need a goal with Philippe Clement revealing that the 31-year old isn’t far from returning to action:

“And Kemar Roofe is getting also better and better but he’s not training with the group yet and the two others is more long-term.”

There have never been any doubts about Roofe’s ability to score goals or his finishing ability but he has never been able to stay fit.

If Rangers had signed another striker in January, they would have been third choice.

That’s not an easy role to recruit for so, Roofe being available again is the next best thing.

It might not be the perfect solution, but it’s the one that we have to accept and it might just make the difference.
