Swansea attacker Morgan Whittaker plays for Swansea City as he returns to the side in a seven-goal thriller v Birmingham City after links to Rangers this January.

The 22-year-old forward, who as recalled to the Championship club after an explosive first half of the season with League One Plymouth, came off the bench in the 4-3 Swansea defeat to their English second tier rivals.

Whittaker’s return comes in controversial circumstances given the links to Rangers, with the attacker pulling out of previous Swansea matchday squads in the January window due to his head being turned by the interest.

Morgan Whittaker replaced Swansea star Liam Cullen with 20 minutes to play and Russell Martin’s side 3-2 up as they continue their hunt for a potential promotion place.

But the game would turn on its head in the final moments, Birmingham City striker Lucas Jutkiewicz equalising in the 90th minute of the game before Auston Trusty scored in the 97th minute to win the game.

Morgan Whittaker returns for Swansea

This was after Scott Hogan had put Birmingham 1-0 up from the penalty spot, with Joel Piroe and Liam Cullen – the man Morgan Whittaker replaced for Swansea – turning the game around.

Tahith Chong had equalised for Birmingham in the second half with Joel Piroe netting his second of the game minutes later.

But as Morgan Whittaker returned and Swansea thought they were heading for three points, the match turned on its head in the closing stages and manager Russell Martin must’ve been ripping come full-time.

The ex-Rangers defender was also speaking about the Ibrox interest in Forest Whittaker, with the former centre-back and now Swansea boss taking the chance to apologise for being “rubbish” at Ibrox.

“I’ve had Rangers fans message me on LinkedIn saying let him [Morgan Whittaker] go,” said Russell Martin.

“I apologised to them saying ‘sorry I was crap at your club but it’s not my decision’.”

Rangers boss Michael Beale did admit that the Ibrox side made a bid for Morgan Whittaker, but refuted the suggestion a third offer was lodged totally £2m.

Meanwhile, Rangers face a serious John Lundstram blow.
