Reported Rangers target Lawrence Shankland has responded to claims from former Ayr United manager Ian McCall that the striker was “very close” to joining Rangers.
McCall, now manager of Championship strugglers Partick Thistle, claimed that Shankland was in the advanced stages of a move to Rangers [Scottish Sun] with his contract at Somerset Park expiring.
But Shankland – who opted to sign for Dundee United and is rated £405k by Transfermarkt – has denied any knowledge of the alleged Ibrox move.
“He [McCall] must have known something I didn’t know,” said Shankland [Daily Record].
“I didn’t know much about that, honestly.
“They might have been watching me last season but there was nothing stick-on about it.”
Shankland’s comments come after his rampant form at Dundee United in the Championship earned him a call-up to the Scotland national team.
The on-fire Arabs striker has hit 15 goals in 12 games and given his form over the last two seasons, has earned his place in the Scotland side.
His form has also reportedly caught the eye of both Rangers and Celtic, with reports suggesting both Old Firm clubs were interested in moving for the player [Daily Record].

Given that Shankland, 24, is a well-known Rangers fans, that would suggest the Ibrox club could have the upper hand in any move.
But according to the player himself, there’s been nothing official between the Ibrox club and his representatives. Not yet at least.
