Rangers were “very close” to signing former Ayr United striker Lawrence Shankland, according to his old boss at Somserset Park, Ian McCall.

Shankland, 24, joined Dundee United in the summer and his rampant form and 15 goals this season have earned the striker a call-up to the Scotland national team.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, former Ibrox midfielder McCall appeared to confirm that Rangers came close to signing the in-form striker and diehard bluenose.

“That was close, very close, particularly for one of them to come and take him,” McCall suggested [Scottish Sun].

Host Jonathon Sutherland replied: “Blue half?”

McCall said: “Yes.”

Sutherland then asked: “Last season?”

The now Partick Thistle boss simply responded, “yes.”

It’s interesting that now McCall is suggesting Rangers wanted to sign Shankland given the intense speculation that has surrounded the forward over the last year.

A known Rangers fan, Shankland will perhaps have ambitions of one day walking out at Ibrox in the royal blue of the team he grew up supporting.

There had been and continues to be, plenty of speculation surrounding the striker and potential interest from both sides of the Old Firm.

For whatever reason the move for Shankland last season appears to have broken down. That could well be because the forward didn’t fancy playing third fiddle to Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

But could we yet see Shankland at Ibrox in the coming years?
