Kevin Muscat doubters sent message after Rangers job near-miss

Rangers have already been told they may have missed the boat with Kevin Muscat.

In the process of appointing Philippe Clement, the Gers board interviewed the Aussie and it came down to a straight choice between the two before the Belgian got the nod.

Muscat went on to manage Shanghai Port in China and recently won a title with them, his fifth already in his relatively short managerial career.

With recent results and performances not up to scratch at Ibrox, questions are starting to be asked of Clement with some fans in favour of a change.

But Rangers were recently told the ship had sailed on appointing Muscat after knocking him back previously.

Ange Postecoglou insists Muscat would be success after Rangers interview

Craig Moore explained how the 51-year-old had been interviewed twice before Clement’s appointment and was left devastated when he didn’t get the job.

Moore was a major advocate of his countryman at the time and gave him his backing for the hotseat.

Another man who rates him highly is Ange Postecoglou, who had him as his assistant at Melbourne Victory and then saw him succeed him at Yokohama F Marinos.

And the former Celtic boss has a message for anyone who doubts Muscat’s capability to manage in Europe.

Speaking to ESPN, Postecoglou said: “I’ve got no doubt [Muscat would be a success in Europe]. With a lot of things, it’s about what experience teaches you.

“Musky probably understands that better now: that it’s not just about taking that opportunity. You’ve got to make sure it’s the right one for [you].

“I think he’s got enough runs on the board now where he can be fairly selective about what he does next and I think that’s the most important thing. I’ve got no doubt if and when he gets over across the Europe, he’ll be successful.

“People are very dismissive of success that doesn’t occur in their own backyard, particularly here in Europe. They’re very Eurocentric.

“But winning a title in Asia is just as difficult as winning a title in Holland, in Belgium, or anywhere else. And he’s got a track record of success now in three countries. No doubt that can transfer here.”

Kevin Muscat track record that had him on Rangers radar

Muscat has now managed four different clubs in four different countries.

He started off with Melbourne Victory after taking over from Postecoglou, under whom he had served as assistant.

He would go on to win two A-League Championships as well as being crowned ‘Premiers’ another time, meaning they finished top of the table but lost out in the Grand Final.

His success caught the attention of Belgian side Sint-Truidense and he became their boss in June 2020. However, Muscat would last just six months after poor results earned him the sack.

He then succeeded Postecoglou at Yokohama F Marinos in 2021 and the following year delivered the J-League title.

It was after his spell in Japan that he was on Rangers‘ radar but after Clement got the job he went on to accept the post in Shanghai.
